Peru is the South American country where Pope Leo XIV spent much of his life as an Augustinian missionary, seminary teacher and Bishop of Chiclayo. He became a naturalised Peruvian citizen in 2015.

The future pope first went to Peru in 1985, to the mission of Chulucanas. Over the following decades he worked in formation, canon law and diocesan administration in Trujillo and then led the diocese of Chiclayo. A papal visit to Peru has been reported as under consideration for 2026 or 2027.
