Pope Leo XIV Travels — Turkey & Lebanon 2025
November 27, 2025 – December 2, 2025 · Türkiye and Lebanon
Pope Leo XIV's first apostolic journey abroad. In Türkiye he marked the 1,700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I at İznik; he then travelled to Lebanon in a visit centred on peace and support for the country's Christians.
Why the visit matters
The trip signalled that ecumenism and interreligious dialogue would be central to the pontificate. It also completed a journey Pope Francis had planned before his death, and brought a papal message of peace to a region marked by war and economic collapse.
